Purim is a Jewish holiday commemorating the deliverance of the Jews from Haman, an official of the Achaemenid Empire who conspired to execute all of Persia's Jewish subjects, as recorded in the Book of Esther. Haman was the royal vizier of King Ahasuerus of Persia.

Purim is the plural form of the Hebrew word pur, which means to throw away in the sense of random selection.
